The database also contains older death records for some parishes, such as deaths that occurred in Jefferson parish before 1911, and deaths that occurred in Orleans parish as early as 1804.

If you need a certified copy of a birth or death certificate from another state, you must contact that state's vital records office. Under Louisiana law, birth records are strictly confidential until 100 years after the year of birth and death records are strictly confidential until 50 years after the year of the death.

How to Find a Death Record in Louisiana? - State Records
A death certificate issued by the Louisiana Vital Records Office costs $9 for the first copy, which is often issued to the funeral director. Thereafter, subsequent copies of the death certificate cost $7 each. However, a Parish Clerk of Court may issue a death certificate at $26 per copy.

Online Public Vital Records Index - Louisiana
You can search the Louisiana Death Records Index Database and order certified copies of death certificates for deaths that occurred in Louisiana more than 50 years from the end of the current calendar year. Photocopies of death certificates are delivered by mail for $5 each, and certified copies are delivered by mail for $10 each.

Louisiana is a "closed record" state. This means that birth and death certificates are not public records. All requests for birth or death certificates must include proper identification, appropriate fees, and a completed application. Fetal death certificates and Certificates of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth may also be ordered.

The Archives charges $5 for a photocopy and $10 for a certified copy of the record, which includes a three year search per surname. Fees must be retained for both successful and unsuccessful searches. Searches are processed by a given year; therefore, a name, place and date, or a span of three years, is required to research a request.
